Asian Civilisation Museum. Afiqah's Experience. My whole experience in the Asia Civilization Museum was great. It was located in City Hall and so it was kind of near to our school. I was happy that I get to go inside the museum and it was FREE because we were in our uniform :) I get to see and learn on how Singapore was back then. And also it teaches me on how the other races do their daily work, on how they pray and etc. I was really fortunate to get to learn about all this. And so, that’s my whole experience of my visit to the Asia Civilization Museum. Amirah's Experience When I reached the Empress Building I was excited to know about other religions background. Its interesting to look at their costume, homes, human statue and also their culture material such as tabla, Quran, wayang kulit, peranakan costume, Chinese costume and more! We took alot of pictures and we didn't miss any galleries in there, the best part is we get to try out chinese costumes! One of our group member Afiqah wore the Chinese costume and she looks good in it and my other group member, Maya tried their Chinese boots! Its kinda too big for her but its just a dress up. :) We had so much fun! We snap a few photos of us in the gallery and I also learnt more about others culture and I'm amazed when I heard what my group leader, Gomathi told me a story of Buddhist and a few others, I'm really amazed. I should go there again to take more pictures :) Overall its AWESOME! After visiting City Hall and Boat Quay river we carried on walking towards the Empress Building. It was free of charge to enter the museum. We went in and saw alot of maniquenes about the different Gods that we pray in around the world. They were the Chinese, Malays and Indian Gods. There were illustrations about each Gods. We also see how Robinson Road was in the past and we saw the sampan boat which the Malay people used to travel on the river. We took alot of pictures and videos. This place was useful for us. We had alot of fun in this museum. Maya's Experience We went to one of the museum in Singapore as part of your LPDX project. This was the first outing we went as a group. Places we went to were:
The museum itself was interesting. The region's only museum devoted to the civilisation and culture of Asia. We uncover the moving story of immigrants who lived and worked on the Singapore River. Inside the museum itself has many types of religious like Islam, Buddhist, Taoism and Christian. Even the history of Asian heroes. It's an amazing experience to me because we tried the Chinese costume and i tried the boots on, it was to big for me. We took different types of pictures & even make videos on some interesting artifacts. You should take time out go to The Empress Building, which is the Asian Civilisation Museum & find out more about the Asian Cultures. |

Singapore is amazing & beautiful. The Empress Place Building is one of the historic buildings in Singapore, located along the north bank of the Singapore River in the Downtown Core, within the Central Area in Singapore's central business district. The building is currently the second wing of the Asian Civilisations Museum. During the era of the colonial, the Empress Place Building was just known simply as Government Offices. The first civic buildings were planned here during the Sir Stamford Raffles' day. It was originally intended to be a courthouse, the Empress Place Building instead became offices for the government departments. Government departments continued to occupy the building after Singapore's independence. In honor of Queen Victoria, the front of the building was a public square which was given the name Empress Place by the Municipal Council in 1907 . It's the oldest pedestrian space in Singapore. As time passed, Government Offices became associated with Empress Place and its name changed to as what we known today. Surrounding the Empress Place, the Memorial Hall and Tower were built in 1905 and extensive renovations were carried out from 1954 till 1979. Raffles' statue was built in front of the Victoria Memorial Hall and Theatre, as it is called, was first erected on the Padang in 1887 but later moved to its present site in 1919. In 1972 a second statue which was a copy of the first one, was erected at Raffles Landing Place. In the late 1980s, the government departments used The Empress Place Building. It was perhaps known as the Registry of Births and Deaths, the Citizenship Registry, and the Immigration Department. Even though the museum was afflicted with structural and logistical problems from its inception, it managed to organise five outstanding exhibitions on Chinese's history in six years. It is one of the first of these exhibitions, which featured royal objects from the Qing Dynasty, has display many precious artifacts never seen before outside China. Subsequently, the Empress Place Building underwent renovations and on 2 March 2003, it reopened as the second wing of the Asian Civilisations Museum. Not only Chinese's historywas exhibiting it also has history of Southeast, South, and West Asian collections. That includes different religions from the different races. "The Empress Place Building was gazetted as a national monument on 14 February 1992."-taken from wikipedia For more information, please visit http://www.acm.org.sg/the_museum/history_building.asp |
